Do Kids Need Orthotics for Flat Feet?
Honest advice from Leading Health Podiatry Modbury: most children with flat feet do not need orthotics.
Flat Feet in Children: What’s Normal?
Flat feet are very common in young children and are usually part of normal development. In most cases, the arch gradually develops as the child grows. Flexible flat feet, where an arch appears when standing on tiptoes or sitting, are generally not a cause for concern.
When Treatment Is Not Needed
In many cases, no treatment is required. If your child is:
- Not experiencing pain
- Keeping up with peers in activity and sport
- Showing flexible, symmetrical flat feet
then orthotics are usually not necessary.
When Orthotics May Help
Orthotics may be considered if a child has:
- Heel or foot pain
- Tired or fatigued feet
- Difficulty keeping up in sport or play
- Frequent tripping or reduced foot control
In these cases, orthotics can help improve comfort and support function.
Do Orthotics “Fix” Flat Feet?
Orthotics do not permanently change foot structure or create an arch in most children. Their main role is to reduce symptoms and improve function when needed.
