Capsulitis

What is Capsulitis?

Capsulitis is the inflammation of the fibrous joint capsule surrounding a joint, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. It can weaken joint function and increase the risk of dislocation or further injury. While capsulitis can affect any joint, it most commonly occurs in the ball of the foot, particularly around the second toe.

Causes and Risk Factors

Capsulitis is often caused by repetitive stress or excessive pressure on the foot joints, especially during high-impact activities like running. Wearing high heels, narrow shoes, or unsupportive footwear can increase the risk, particularly for women. Other contributing factors include bunions, hammertoes, tight calf muscles, and foot instability.

Symptoms of Capsulitis

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain under or around a joint, often described as the sensation of walking on a pebble.
  • Swelling, redness, and warmth in the affected area.
  • Difficulty walking or putting pressure on the joint.
  • In more severe cases, joint instability or toe misalignment.

Treatment and Prevention

At Leading Health Podiatry, we focus on relieving pressure from the affected joint and addressing the underlying causes. Treatment options include custom foot orthotics, padding, strapping, and footwear modifications to reduce strain. In more advanced cases, splinting or joint immobilization may be necessary. We also emphasize long-term prevention by identifying and correcting gait abnormalities and strengthening foot muscles.

Early intervention is key—don’t let capsulitis progress. Seeking timely podiatric care can prevent complications and support a faster recovery.
